The Federal Government, on Sunday, January 29th, announced that it is no longer accepting applications for the ecoENERGY Retrofit Program. Set to expire at the end of March, the announcement ends the program two months earlier than scheduled.

If you have not enrolled, the program is effectively over. If you are already a participating homeowner, contact the program at 1 800 622-6232 and quote your 10-digit ecoENERGY number to verify your status. More information about end dates at www.ecoaction.gc.ca/homes

Does Your Roof Have Enough Snow?

Have you ever looked out the window and noticed that some homes seem to have less snow on their roofs than others? Most of the time, the amount of snow on your roof isn’t a problem. However, homes that lose more heat through their roof space melt the snow faster and that can be a sign of insufficient insulation or poor ventilation. Does your roof have enough snow?

Ideally, a properly insulated home with adequate ventilation will have a cold roof space. Any heat or moisture that does get into the roof space should escape easily through the roof vents. If your house does not have enough insulation OR adequate ventilation, heat and moisture can be trapped in the roof space. This causes the roof space to heat up and melt the snow above.

In homes with plenty of insulation but poor ventilation, the roof space will still eventually warm. The heat cannot easily escape causing the snow to melt. The trapped moisture in a warm roof space can lead to wood rotting.

If your home has excellent ventilation but poor insulation, the wood in your roof will be protected but your heating bill will be higher. Heat and moisture will escape and not melt the snow except maybe near the outside walls. This area will be the warmest because the heat has not yet had a chance to escape. Snow that melts here and causes ice to build-up, may lead to leakage.

A well insulated and ventilated roof space will keep a healthy amount of snow on it and not have constant ice build-up. The next time after a good snowfall, have a look at your roof. Compare it with similar houses on the same side of your street. Comparing a house on the North side of a street to a house on the South side would not be a fair comparison because they get differing amounts of sunlight. If your home does not have enough snow, it might be worthwhile to call an insulation or roofing professional.

Detangle Stress Of Family Ties . . .

The holidays are a wonderful opportunity to spend time with family. But sometimes the pleasure of being with our loved ones comes with a few tangled ties to stress. Here are a few strategies to make sure you experience maximum joy from being with family:

Get Rid of Fantasy. If your image of the perfect holiday has Tiny Tim’s voice ringing “God bless us, every one!” your great expectations may be completely out of alignment with reality. Communication problems are not unusual with extended families. You cannot control every situation, but you can lead by example, setting aside differences and bad patterns.

Establish Ground Rules and Boundaries. Among the immediate family discuss what is expected. Agree to keep respect for each other and to not share anything with the extended family that would cause embarrassment. Develop your own family traditions and be willing to let go of outdated rituals that no longer serve you and your immediate family.

Simplify, Prioritize, and Say No. Remember the wisdom of a 1960′s band who told us that you Can’t Buy Me Love. Less can be more when it comes to gift giving. Let your heart express love in ways that may not require a lot of money and give yourself permission to spend less.

Provide Structure for Kids. You’ve heard before that love is spelled with the letters T-I-M-E. Yet during the holiday season kids can become starved for attention as you rush around trying to do everything. Break away from the extended family at least once each day to take walks or some other physical activity. Giving this time to your kids, and limiting sugar and caffeine, can go a long way to them behaving when you are around extended family.

Honor Your Own Needs and Limitations. Trust that quiet inner voice that tells you when you have done enough. You deserve time to sit down and reflect on your many blessings, including your family!

Avoid Online Shopping Scams . . .

The convenience of doing holiday shopping online is really appealing. Follow these four tips from shopping experts for avoiding scams and making safe purchases online:

Read the domain carefully at the top of the browser. If the name is slightly different than the legitimate retailer – with extra words, or misspellings – it could be a sneaky company hoping to snag your money.

Make sure the domain’s checkout pages are secure. Only enter credit card information if the domain begin with https:// instead of http://. The “s” means it is secure.

Never agree to a wire transfer payment. Legitimate retailers online accept credit cards where you have more protection against fraud.

Beware of ridiculously low prices. Scammers can lure you with prices much lower than other retailers and end up sending you poor quality merchandise – or nothing at all – after they get your money. You can find a scam alert archive at www.aarp.org or get more details about online security at www.onguardonline.gov.

Holiday Dangers For Children . . .

With families gathering, special occasions and all the delicious treats, the holiday season creates precious memories that can last an entire lifetime. Unfortunately, the emergency rooms become part of the tradition for too many kids. Watch out for these dangers:

Poisonous plants like mistletoe, poinsettias and holly are commonly used for holiday decor, but they should be kept out of the reach of kids. Plant poisoning symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rashes. If you have any suspicion of plant poisoning call your doctor or the National Poison Center: (800) 222–1222. And, yes, that’s a real phone number!

Alcohol poisoning of children is common during the holiday season. Parents often host parties where alcohol is served and the kids imitate the adults. Small amounts of an adult beverage can make a kid “drunk” and in danger of injuring themselves. Remove all empty and partially finished cups as soon as possible to keep them away from small hands.

Food poisoning can also pose a potential threat to children. Practice food safety by washing hands, dishes, cutting boards and utensils with particular care toward items that come in contact with raw meat or poultry. Refrigerate leftover food quickly to avoid contamination.

Choking and swallowing hazards are everywhere during the holidays. Tree ornaments, icicles, tinsel and small toys can be partially swallowed and end up blocking the child’s airway. If it is small enough to get inside a small child’s mouth, it is too small to leave out.

Cuts, skin irritation, or eye damage can be caused by the needles of holiday trees, angel hair (made from spun glass) and ornament hangers.

No one wants to remember a trip to the emergency room over the holidays. Being aware of fire hazards, increased accidents during busy shopping times, and watching for the dangers listed above should help you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season.

Q. How can I make my home appear larger?

A. There are many tricks to fool the eye and make each room in your home to appear larger than its actual dimensions. Try a few of these tips:Use mirrors to reflect the focal point of your room. The mirror will give the space depth, echo the beauty of your focal point and reflect light to make the room much brighter.Lighting will expand the look of the space too. If you don’t have ample sunlight, add some lighting fixtures along the outside perimeter of the room to add color and focus attention in the distance.Coordinate the color of furniture to blend with the soft, light hues of your wall surfaces. The monochromatic color scheme avoids the choppy look of contrasting colors and opens up the space.

Clear the clutter from the room. Having fewer things that could distract the eye makes the room seem more spacious. Narrow your decor items to only the things you love. Without the excess clutter, you will have a relaxed, open area that appears inviting and roomy.
